as i head into

day 5

still

off the

power grid

the pace of life

has

slowed

days

spent

walking

writing

reading

thinking

bathing by candlelight

catching up with friends

in the coffee shop

on the street

with

neighbors

there is a natural rhythm to it all

waking with the return of the light

sleeping when the dark returns once more

it’s a peaceful and quiet existence

until

monday comes

and

i have to

wake up

in the pitch black

to go to school

there’s an art

to applying

makeup

by

flashlight

and

with

only

two hands

luckily

my loyal

carpool partner

has

promised

to alert me

if

 my clothes are on backwards

or

 anything looks dramatically amiss

and

i find

that

while

i

look

forward to the light

i

am

enjoying the calm

of the dark

wisely, and slow. they stumble that run fast.

  1. Isn’t the calm of the dark so peaceful (that said, I hope your lights come back soon for life purposes)? That moon was just beautiful. That’s what friends do(let you know when clothes are on backwards, tags are sticking out etc…)

    • absolutely, mark. not sure what grade your kids are in, but we kind of ease our early childhood kids in over 3 days, orientation morning w parents, half day on their own, and tehn finally full day, and i know it’s hard for the parents –

  3. You are a trouper, Beth. Ask the daughters for a generator for Christmas this year, perhaps? The way Mother Nature has been treating us, that may be the best gift, ever. I am still wishing for you to get your power back, despite your comfort with the new rhythm. ))

  4. Oh, no! I thought in 2014, they could magically fix these things, short of a hurricane. It’s certainly a test for an impatient culture, and you sound like you are managing it well. You always seem to have a calm about you.

  5. Is this your carpool friend who stops for donuts and you are easily heading a different direction home? I rather vaguely remember the 2 of you having some adventures. I am sorry about losing electricity. I am so glad you have body in your hair, I like the way it has waves and curls, Beth. I also think the kids are fine without you applying much makeup… The baths by candlelight, the walks by the light of the moon, help it all even out a bit. This is another ‘super moon’ time, Tuesday it is supposed to be its very brightest in the sky. I saw it when I left the library and caught it on my digital camera and then, when I drove to work this morning on the horizon, leaving us. Take care and my fingers are crossed that the end of this trying, but peaceful time, is near!

    • yes, it is robin, you have a very good memory. we’ve seen each other through thick and thin and that’s why it’s such a good car partnership turned into a friendship. i know the light will return one day and until then, i’ll just keep trying to make the best of it )

      • So glad I remembered on this partner in travel. I mentioned your hair, because it doesn’t need to have (hot electric) curlers or a hair dryer like mine does to have body! Mine is straight and rather limp… You may have wondered why I was talking about your beauty routines! smiles from your ‘partner in crime’ ha ha!

  6. Oh my goodness! I had no idea! I’m just finding you again today 😦 I’m going to unfollow and then follow you again. I hope that will fix my reader. So so glad your power is back. I didn’t even know there were bad storms any where….that’s the downside to throwing away our TV 12 years ago! We miss so much news….hope your carpool partner didn’t find anything too horribly amiss 😛
