having
named
all of
my
3 daughters
all close in age
with
names
that
all begin
with the letter
h
has caused
me to
rarely
if ever
call them
by their
proper name
at least
on
the first
or
the second
try
and
they’ve
all learned
over time
to just
answer
to
any of them
and
when they
all sign their cards
to me
love
your favorite daughter, h
i know i’ve done it right

one thing they never tell you about child raising is that for the rest of your life, at the drop of a hat, you are expected to know your child’s name and how old he or she is.

Ha! That is funny Beth/ Well, even if you can’t get their names right, you at least know they start with H. ha!

Good thinking. 🙂
The same practice is done locally. My first cousin’s children have names starting with the letter H. Hyacinth is the eldest.

All starting with “H” would make it harder but I grew up being called “SueMaryBarb.” My sisters, the same with the names reshuffled.

There’s four of us and we were all M’s. It was hilarious watching our mom stammer through the list of named until she finally landed on the right on, especially when she was in a tiz.

Haha! Loved it when my frazzled mom mixed us up. We’d laugh, which made her angrier. Later, she just yelled “girls”.

Naming all the girls with the same first letter might be tricky, sure.
We were five girls in our family and our names started with different letters. No matter. My mother still mixed our names up.
Maybe it’s a mother thing? ❤ 😀

Perfect. My grandmother called all of us “Dolly,” even my cousin Richard, that way she was always right:) There were only three of us but she didn’t want to take a chance:) Funny and sweet post. Always love them. 🙂

This was so funny, loved your story especially, Beth! Those girls are shiny apples that don’t fall far from their sweet apple tree! I laugh when my Mom used to try to go through the R’s- I would think of Scooby Doo saying, “Ruh ro!” Oh, oh! I am now able to call my children their proper names but the grandies get a lot of M’s and L’s until I get to the correct one. They are too little to ‘put up with it,’ and just exasperatingly say, “I’m so and so!” smiles

that’s great – my mom is one of the “S”-named sisters – my grandfather used to run through all three names, sometimes repeatedly, before landing on the correct one

oh, my heavens? I am one of three S’s…(I know…not asses, but S’s)…and my dad would call the roll to get to my name…I am the youngest and the final name uttered…and he could never get our middle names associated with the right S!

Four of my girls are less than four years apart in age (14, 13, 13 and 11). When they get me flustered I tend to get the names mixed up, after which I simply refer to them collectively as “all y’all,” as in “All y’all just knock it off!” This tends to elicit smiles. I suppose they know their work is done.

that is fantastic! i’m going to try using ‘all y’all’ in the future. i love that.

I feel your pain, Beth. Our cat, Tumbleweed, ran out in the street … or, maybe, it was our youngest daughter, Jenn. Whatever! I got the names mixed up when I shouted a warning to get out of the street, and our girls never let me forget it. 😉
