once in a while
there are those perfect days
when holidays collide
today is one such day
groundhog’s day
and
an official snow day from school
a surprise gift from the universe
and i will celebrate both
“today is “ground-hog’s day” in many parts of the united states,
and candlemas day in many other parts of the world.
from time immemorial,
it has been a critical day in the affairs of the weather.
the character of the second of february is
really of much more importance
than whether the first of march comes in like a lion or a lamb.”
the simplest form of the adage is:—
if candlemas day be bright and clear,
there’ll be two winters in that year.
~hartford courant, 1877

We have a snow day as well and no ground hog, I expect. He’s buried down in his cozy home somewhere deep.

That is a great quote! We have 33 degrees but no snow and no school until Wednesday. I think it’s an official Super Bowl recovery day for the parents.

If January is cold and gray, February is a step closer to a change. I always thought of January as steel blue and February a faded red. The transition must be purple, then, right Beth?

As I watched my dog and my young son play in the snow, with joy on both faces, I thought the day could not be more perfect:). Right there with you!

I am so glad you got everything you wished for, Beth! My good friend, retired teacher of reading and special needs, still shakes a snow globe, wishing for her working teaching friends to have a snow day! She also has “snow” as her password on a lot of things. Good thing I don’t let anyone know her last name or they could break into her password garage and house! ha ha! You remind me of Jenny, which is a big compliment, Beth!
I love it when you have a cute picture or two to go with such a fun post, too! xo

I second Jim’s emotion. The lion came early for us in Syracuse, Beth. The groundhog was scared.

I understand Michigan’s state groundhog saw her shadow, so, more winter. Well, the state’s backup groundhog, because the primary groundhog was taken ill. Also, Michigan has a state backup groundhog.

there can never be too many backup groundhogs.

We had about a milimetre of snow here which lasted almost an hour! A beautiful if cold day since. Our winters can’t really compare I’m afraid. Mind you we will probably talk about ‘all’ the snow for at least another week. 🙂

There is no such thing as Groundhog day in the UK although it always sounds like fun. I remember loving the film. A perfect Romcom 🙂

Our older daughter called last night to assure us that she and her wife were well despite all the snow in Boston. She was not happy about trying to get about in it yesterday, and not happy that more snow is on the way. Hope you enjoyed yours though! 🙂

This really is a rich post. Beautiful. The piece about Candlemas Day, from 1877, is really cool.
