Ah, indeed. In my experience the world is made up up of huge forces but those forces are so well balanced and finely tuned that when understood, the tiniest of impetus can affect a huge change. We humans engineer and build the same way. Think about your car: you change the direction and speed of thousands of pounds of steel with just ounces of pressure on the steering wheel or fuel/brake pedals. Some bulldozers weight up to 200,000 pounds and the operators direct them with ounces of force on the controls. So it is with the world around us. In fact, if you want to take it all the way back, all we have to do is think and those thoughts can direct our bodies in action, which in turn can direct even large forces that can literally move mountains. It could be easily argued then that our very thoughts – weightless, massless entities – are what actually cause the moving of mountains.
I once read a science fiction short story about a group of aliens who were having a contest to see which could affect the greatest change on earth with the smallest of inputs. They categorized change as class A to Z, , decreasing in affect and stimulus as A to Z decreasing in affect. The winner caused a class A change with a class Z stimulus. When I read it I thought how much like real life their game was.
“What I want is to open up. I want to know what’s inside me. I want everybody to open up. I’m like an imbecile with a can-opener in his hand, wondering where to begin – to open up the earth. I know that underneath the mess everything is marvelous. I’m sure of it.
I know it because I feel so marvelous myself most of the time. And when I feel that way everybody seems marvelous … everybody and everything … even pebbles and pieces of cardboard … a match stick lying in the gutter . . . anything . . . a goat’s beard, if you like. That’s what I want to write about … and then we’re all going to see clearly, see what a staggering, wonderful, beautiful world it is.”
Love your blog, you knocked it out of the park with this post! Great job, life is all about the little things and appreciating each and every moment. This should have made Freshly Pressed. So true. Tiny things do matter. And I love the tiny tomatoes and tiny bits and pieces from this farmers’ market or wherever it was. Lovely.

And it’s true that those little grape tomatoes are generally a lot tastier than the regular ones.

Life often teaches us that size and significance are often not related.
