when at the main detroit public library
climb up the stairs and step out of the doors
to the loggia outside
look up to the ceiling arches to see
the 7 beautiful mosiacs
inspired by william shakespeare’s
“as you like it”
the 7 stages of man
with thousands of tiny glazed tiles
created by tiny hands at pewabic pottery
after reading the chart below
i believe that i find myself in the 5th stage – justice,
working my way toward the 7th stage – decrepitude.
“we know what we are, but know not what we may be.”
-william shakespeare

Thanks for looking up. Let’s hold off on “decrepitude” for a while longer.

Thank you for reminding me of yet another reason I love the City of my birth. The Detroit Public Libraries were home to me as a child. We lived near the McGregor branch. It had a magnificent doll house on the main floor. I spent nearly as much time admiring that house as I did finding new books to take home and read. ❤

Old Age for me. I like it here. I’m more willing to let things take their course. Decrepitude can wait a few more years.

It is a fabulous word! One to look up to and live joyfully into without fearing the consequences of looking up at the sky above! 🙂

Decrepitude? Couldn’t he have gone with something nicer? Maybe the Chinese idea that we gain wisdom, so we’re wise? Or like wine, we grow richer and more mellow? Have more layers? Hover in justice for a while:)

i know, it is a pretty intense word, i like how he’d make up words to fit his ideas.

I love how you and I share wonder at the world — and look UP! I have a very similar photo I took this week in Berlin of the exquisite loggia over the doorway to an architect’s home from the late 1890s, just up the street from my hotel — now an auction house.
Decrepit? DECREPIT??????
I think not!
