Having worked with adults who were illiterate and seeing the difference this made in their lives, and often their self worth, this is disheartening at the very least.
Today, there is no value put on what has defined America for 2 centuries. Why doesn’t this surprise me? And yes, the typo (Freudian slip?) speaks volumes.
It’s sad, but at least two people are at fault – the writer and her editor. The even more appalling fact is most people who read the article didn’t catch it, read right over it. Keep your head up – you do amazing things with your kindest and I do my darndest with my 8th graders. They’ll find there way and be literate and thinkers and empathetic. Have a wonderful day a great fourth! Peace.
My brother-in-law is illiterate. Not by choice, but by being in school at a time when dyslexia was viewed as a behavior issue, not a learning difference. I’ll assume this judge has never had the displeasure of witnessing a grown man shrink before his eyes when asked to read simple instructions.
yes, i’m sure his life could have been greatly changed had things been different. i think you’re right, this judge has never been personally touched by this, clearly –

Maybe the righter, um, writer, was trying to prove a point? Sadly, so sadly, I agree with you not, Beth.

Oh my goodness. There are so many times I’ve read an article and thought, “Wasn’t there an editor looking over this first?” Come on, people.
