the early days of laugh yoga.
—
i recently received an email
from a local group looking for members
(some of you may remember the ventriloquist’s group who tried to recruit me?)
well, this group is into laughter yoga therapy.
all i could think of was the memory
of my mother in assisted living
one of the only verbal (and opinionated)
people in her group.
one day when i was visiting
a therapist came in
telling them they were going to try a new thing:
laugh yoga therapy
she rolled her eyes but went along
once it was finished they asked her what she thought of it
her response:
“that was the stupidest thing i’ve ever done.”
i’m not sure it had quite the effect on her that they’d hoped for
but her comment gave more than one of us a very good laugh.

the invite:
Metro-Detroit Laughter Therapy Club
The Concept of Laughter Yoga is based on the scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter~ Everyone wants health and happiness in their lives. But instead they are getting stressed out , depressed, getting less sleep, more negative thoughts and feeling isolated. Does this sound like you? Are you someone who wants to move on and bring more laughter and joy into…

That’s funny. I can imagine my mother saying much the same. My father would have rolled his eyes and refused to participate.

People laugh every time I’ve done yoga. I’m a natural for this.

My mom would have said the same thing, but she’s not one for group activities anyway. 😉

I find the older I get, the more I am willing to take chances and try new things – perhaps that’s why your mother gave it a shot?

If they put Yogi Bear and Boo Boo on the screen and called it Laughter Yogi, maybe I’d give it a shot, Beth. Yoga, not so much for me at this point.

Ahhh… yes. I used to work in Ann Arbor. In early childhood… at Gretchens House off Ann Arbor Saline Rd on Oak Valley and also at Annie’s Children’s Center in Kerrytown.

Like Mark said, any yoga class with me in it is Laugh Yoga. I’d love it if that were the intended outcome. Alas, it never is. It’s just me tilting dangerously toward the surrounding people and mats and everyone around me trying to get out of the way and laughing at my efforts…

If I tried yoga, I’m pretty sure the entire group would be laughing…

That’s funny. I would have had the same reaction as your mother though. I regularly roll my eyes (at least internally) about things like that, even though I also know it would be good for me!

There’s Goat Yoga … why not Chimp Yoga? Probably because everybody would just monkey around …

I’ve discovered laughter yoga this year but have not tried it. Sounds legit. I usually watch comedy on Netflix for this purpose 🙂

i did it with my mom that fateful day before she offered her review. with this group, everyone was seated and went through a series of silly movements and laughing to try to inspire positive things in them.
