according to the candles on his cake
my friend’s age
was shown to be one year older
than his actual age.
when asked why the number was different
his wife mentioned
that those were the only candles
to be found in the junk drawer.
ah, wisdom.

At some point, the number gets fairly irrelevant and it’s just nice to have people who want to celebrate you.

I love it! This summer 71 will be my number, so they could send them to me, to use!

In some cultures they would say at the 70th birthday, that they are now running 71, when asked their age! So that also works. Have a great day! I do love your poems!

You’re welcome! I even like to tell people, I am 70, but “running 80!”

that’s wonderful and so funny. the kinder in my class always say “i’m 4 1/2 as soon as the day after their 4th birthday.” that’s looking forward with a positive spin )

So funny. We usually just stick some random number of candles on a cake. Happy birthday to your friend!

If only I had saved all those number-candles that only burn for the duration of “Happy Birthday to you” I’d have all the combinations needed.

an excellent strategy perhaps, until we hit the triple digits, but then we most likely won’t care at all at that point )

HAHA.. You’re right, probably won’t care OR be aware..

At some moments counting is highly over rated. Where as celebrating is a reason and a need.

I dunno. 70 is a pretty big milestone. And sometimes hard to admit to. For those cringing, decade-changing years, I think I”d like the number to be exact… But it also signifies a “who cares” spirit that needs to take over at about that point, says the woman who turned 75 this summer.

wow, that is an amazing milestone, sarah and as you say, the who cares spirit is one that keeps us going )

As one of five kids who were all born within an 8 year span, I think my Mom had pretty much every possible candle digit in the drawer at some point…. and in duplicate.

The takeaway I have on the candles is that at least he had something to blow out to make his wish … AND … there were those three little words on the bottom of his birthday cake …

They should sell a candle that says “ish” to tack on to the end in such cases.
