fairies wintering
—
“Frost grows on the window glass,
forming whorl patterns of lovely translucent geometry.
Breathe on the glass, and you give frost more ammunition.
Now it can build castles and cities and whole ice continents with your breath’s vapor.
In a few blinks you can almost see the winter fairies moving in . . .
But first, you hear the crackle of their wings.”
― vera nazarian, the perpetual calendar of inspiration
Lovely imagery your words have created.

Ooh, I don’t think I’d like to hear the crackle of fairy wings. It sounds like they have frozen and snapped in the cold. 😦 After such a beautiful beginning it really surprised me, so perhaps my interpretation wasn’t what the poet intended.

oh, i see how you could imagine that. i took it as their little wings, covered with a protective shell of winter glaze, making a crackling sound against the glass, now covered with crystal frost, like the tinkling of a wine glass. winter fairies are a hardy lot. not easily broken –

I’ll concur with your greater knowledge of winter fairies since I’ve never known any. Yours is a much better outcome for the fairies than what I was thinking. 🙂

I love it when words create a life we may not have been paying attention to.
