uniform.

Standard

central casting must have had a hand

in a scene on our neighborhood street today.

while waiting at the corner for the light to change

a mail carrier in his blues came by riding a bike

a doctor in scrubs walked across the street on her way home from the hospital

a construction worker in a bright neon vest held the sign for ‘stop’ and ‘slow’

all crossing paths

all in uniform

I have to admit that I felt a bit left out and underdressed

in sandals and comfy clothes

although I suppose I was in a uniform too

that of a teacher on summer break.

“I always had a sense that clothes, be it uniform or vintage,

could help to create a character.”

  1. Oh I love this and as soon as I saw the book cover that song started in my head. Who are the people in your neighborhood, in your neighborhood. I love that you saw all of this and put it together like this. Hope you are enjoying your summer Beth.

  2. It’s wonderful to take/have the time to observe. I haven’t noticed it so much with people in uniform, but I’m often intrigued by the variety of vehicles that pass by on the road.

  3. Hi. Thanks for sharing such a well penned piece of writing. It is that which one sees around us every day that can be a great sources of inspiration. Even when on break or vacation, speaking from personal experience, when does a teacher ever have a moment that can be considered to be a break?!! Happy Sunday. have a wonderful day. Goff
