after finding a tiny baby mole
who has died
along the side of the road
the kids say a few words on its behalf
and place it in the soft leaves of the woods
as a kind and gentle memorial gesture.

I don’t know if I would know a mole if I saw one. Maybe if it emerged from the ground.

the kids knew right away, more in touch with nature closer to the ground than we are perhaps –

That close to the ground thing will do it every time.

That’s where children learn empathy and kindness – spontaneous, random, deserving moments.

A wonderful reminder for all ages, that we perhaps ought to stop not just to smell the flowers, but also to pay homage to our surroundings and all the creatures in them.
The strength and kindness we learn as children is supposed to last our entire lives.
