October 12 is Old Farmers Day,
a day devoted to old farmers and their farming techniques.
how will you celebrate?

“let us not forget that the cultivation of the earth
is the most important labor of man.
when tillage begins, other arts will follow.
the farmers, therefore, are the founders of civilization.”

I used to have a bumper-sticker than said… “When you complain about the farmer – don’t do it with your mouth full!”

I didn’t know that. I think I’ll celebrate by reading some Wendell Berry.

I am caring for my mini garden. My grandparents farmed. It is hard 7-day-a-week job.

That is wonderful, and not easy work

On my wife new Kelly Clarkson Show, they have put in an herb garden on the roof of the studio building, and we now enjoy fresh thai basil, along with carrots and other fresh vegetables…they will be highlighting the garden throughout the year, using the fresh ingredients when Chefs come on the show…we should all become farmers to some degree – but also support real, local farmers instead of mega-companies….

They are! There is a saying in Turkish (by the founder of the country) that ‘villagers (farmers)’ are the masters of the nation. Their contribution is vital!

I thank them! (When I come up behind them in their tractors on the road, I am patient and considerate). We also like to go to the farmer’s markets, and road side selling points.

How about with A (part of a 🙂) Song of Harvest from Whittier:
“Give fools their gold, and knaves their power;
Let fortune’s bubbles rise and fall;
Who sows a field, or trains a flower,
Or plants a tree, is more than all.”
