it is said that no matter how long a conversation has gone on
the most important truths are revealed
as one touches the doorknob and turns to leave.
I find this phenomenon so interesting
and have experienced it firsthand.
have you ever made,
or been the recipient of,
a doorknob confession?

I agree that the most interesting conversation takes place at the door. But I don’t remember any confessions!

a confession is not always in a traditional form, it is often something like a comment – ‘by the way……’

Yup! That has happened many a times. 😂

No I haven’t – but I love(d) Raymond Queneau….
Are we talking here about leaving a room, and turning the doorknob gently or slamming the door?! 😉

I am here reminded of Captain Lawrence Edward Grace “Titus” Oates on the doomed Scott expedition to the south pole who, dying from exposure, gangrene and frostbite left the tent with the words “I am just going outside and may be some time”. A confession that he could not continue!

There is something powerful about that door knob. It is the last chance to say that lingering thought before it is too late.

A doctor told me that patients usually reveal what is really worrying them just as they are going out the door of the surgery!

One of the most-used devices in film and TV is to have a character turn to storm out when the conversation suddenly becomes revealing…

Do you remember Columbo leaving, turning back, taking a puff of his cigar and having the doorknob moment… “just one more thing”? 🙂

yep, that’s a perfect example

I never thought about this, but it is so true. A couple people mentioned Columbo using such a technique. I’m reminded of Steve Jobs and his new product introductions, “one more thing…”, which you referenced above as well. great post; I’ll be on the lookout for more of these doorknob confessions…

I can’t recall a door knob confession.
I usually blurt things out at some inopportune moment, well before departing.
The best thing about that is, we all get to be uncomfortable, until we work it out!
All that’s left at the door knob is a good “good-bye”.

Oh yes, I sure did make a doorknob confession. My therapy session had ended, literally had my hand on the doorknob as I told her I had relapsed (after 17 years of sobriety), and I walked out. She was NOT happy 😰
