I laughed just seeing your title. I come from a long line of women who wandered into the kitchen after Thanksgiving dinner, opened the refrigerator door, and said, “Oh, my gosh! I forgot to put out the jellow salad!”

If you’ve never tried my mother’s carrot/pineapple/coconut orange jello concoction, you haven’t lived. She did one with cranberry relish, orange and celery that was pretty special too. Always with a dollop of Miracle Whip on top.

oh, wow, that is incredibly creative. I am always amazed with what people came up with, and once it was in a family it continued on forever. we used to have a 6 layer rainbow colored one, with cream cheese layers in between, painstakingly created by my Italian mother in a lasagne pan each year at Christmas

Yes, the perpetuation is the funny part. And it gets eaten less and less, and finally the perpetuator hears someone begging their child to take a “courtesy bite” of the thing, and even then they don’t get it. The lasagne jello may win the contest for creativity!

That is so true! People are very loyal to their family Jell-O creations. We loved it as kids but not so much anymore.

My sister-in-law and I have a running Thanksgiving joke because I come in from out of town and never can bring a significant part of the meal, so I tell her I’m bringing the lime jello. One year we stopped by the grocery store and DID bring some, and there was a toddler there who thought it was the best part of the meal!

That is amazing…ly disturbing AND entertaining. I only had jello a few times as a kid, only red flavor (whatever that was) cut into cute “jigger” shapes.

I remember just eating the jello powder during swim meets when I was little; I guess it was for that quick sugar high that would supposedly make me swim faster. shaky science at best!

My aunt made a Jell-o mold with lime Jell-o and shredded carrots. It wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I expected it to be.
Jell-o used to make a savory version that went well with vegetables.

I like the mouthfeel of Jell-O about once a year just for fun. But I have so many old magazines full of gross Jello images like the one you shared. It’s not enough to make me not stuff myself tomorrow, but still. It just seems like sugar and vegetables don’t go together. On an aside, I bought some candy cigarettes this past weekend and one of the ingredients was beef gelatin!

when I was a kid I was fascinated by jello salads – all that wiggling. My favourite dinner was my Mom’s tuna casserole (the kind made with a can of mushroom soup and egg noodles). If I was good, Mom would make green jello salad with grated carrots in it. It’s still a fond memory – I might have to make some this holiday season now that you’ve brought it to mind! Thanks 🙂
