for some reason
after almost 8 years of blogging
and never questioning it
I only recently discovered
what the word ‘blog’ actually means.
—
Blog is another word for weblog.
A weblog is a website that is like a diary or journal. …
Bloggers often write about their opinions and thoughts.
A blog containing video material is called a video blog or video log,
usually shortened to vlog.
—
“Blogging is to writing what extreme sports are to athletics: more free-form, more accident-prone, less formal, more alive. It is, in many ways, writing out loud.” For most of human history, all published writing had been carefully inspected, edited, and approved. In the last decade, blogging has turned the publishing world on its head. A blog allows you to write and publish anything, from anywhere, and have it be immediately available to billions of people all around the world.” -Andrew Sullivan, the Atlantic
. I, for one, am happy to embrace the chaos and vitality.
I didn’t know that detail either or rather, I didn’t think about it because I quickly figured out the meaning of vlog! Since I knew about blogging, I always called (and explained it to elderly people) them ‘a public diary’ – and I still find that’s a pretty good description.

That’s one of the treasures of English, Beth, that we can adapt our words to meet the changes and needs of our lives. Web logs would be far too wieldy on the fingers and mind, so we begat blogs. Yay, us! Heck. It wasn’t too long ago in the grand scheme that webs were for spiders, not world wide writers and readers.

I’m not sure that knowing that “blog” comes from “weblog” is really all that important when it comes to doing it. And you do a great job with it.
Did you know that, by and large, orange cats are males? Though I understand that’s changing…

I agree, but was suddenly curious after all this time for some reason. I love the Atlantic writer’s explanation below the actual definition to be more apt.

That’s true, most orange tabbys are male. I have one. But yeah, I’ve been hearing more and more about the female version… and that they may need glasses.

Let me add that, while more a dog person, any post that includes an animal wearing glasses automatically wins the internet….bravo!

I like “we blog” better because a blog is a community. But I guess we log as well.

I’ve always wanted to be an extreme athlete; I guess blogging is the closest I’ll ever get. Now And now I know why you didn’t have your glasses on – the cat had them! 🙂

fantastic quote. Hi there. I am going around the neighborhood introducing myself. My name is Marc. My blog contains excerpts from my book The Driveway Rules. It contains memoirs about growing up with undiagnosed autism. I hope you stop by.

I think since I started blogging in March 2012 my blog has undergone a couple of major transformations and though it can still be quite political at times, it is much more focused on my poetry than it used to be. In saying that however, I can see another change to it next year. We are living in interesting times.
