back in the day
when my girls were little
if there was a power outage
I would tell them
we were just like the family
in ‘the little house on the prairie’
we could pretend we were them
have lots of fun
it was okay for a while
until it got old
the novelty wore off
when there was
no pa playin’ the fiddle
no butter to churn
no humming and singing
no stitchin’ to be done
no cows to milk
then we just had to wait it out
and it was not fun.

I’m the father of three girls and when they were small I was asked how much longer the car journey would take after about twenty minutes of a seven hour journey: the gradual decline into restless crying and backseat mayhem lives with me still !!

I always said 10 minutes even if it was cross country

Wait, you didn’t have a “butter churner” in the closet with the batteries? 😉

We were clearly not up to speed with the latest technology)

How sweet! Not having had TV, I had to find ‘stories’ to quieten my son who was horrendously afraid of storms with lightning and thunder…. I used to step out onto the balcony from which we saw Lake Zurich (and the lightnings zig-zagging into it – maybe not such a great idea after all!), having my child in my arm and in the other arm holding my dachsie who was shivering too with angst (thunder)…. telling stories about the weather, the light, the music the clouds made…..
The things mothers do to calm and entertain their children just to keep them safe.

Your internet was down this weekend, too, Beth?

This was back in the day, pre-internet, with my kids were small

I got that part. I thought maybe it was inspired by a more recent event, though, because OUR internet was down and it was said to be quite widespread.

When the power goes out, I read 😁 Even before Kindle, I’d read by candle light. Just like The pioneers. When my boys were small, I’d make up stories on the spot 😁

When my kiddos were small and we were waiting out log power outages from the hurricanes, it was an “adventure” for a few days — and then it just got old. LOL!

The theme song is now playing in my head! Also, Charles cried a lot didn’t he? Also, too: I had the biggest crush on Nellie as a boy!
