on a long walk in the park each day
i see people and animals outside
staying a safe distance from each other
alone
alone together
—
“nothing makes the earth seem so spacious as to have friends at a distance;
they make the latitudes and longitudes.”
-henry david thoreau
Oh I wish I had known that quote by our learned friend before…. for the past 22yrs I was separated and united “long distance” with my family and many friends…. a beautiful testimonial Beth. Thank you for sharing. ❤

I, too, am walking alone in the company of others. While walking the streets and parks I find fellow travelers who seek company through smiles exchanged, hands that are waved and greetings at a distance. Strangers have never been friendlier. We, the intrepid walkers, have found a new kind of frendship.in our courage to continue.

Beautifully said. Though given great brevity, your words are powerful and thought provoking. We are forced to see our world differently now. Well written, Beth!

My dear wife Karen and I on our walk yesterday saw two adult men heaving a football to and fro from at least 30 yards apart yesterday, Beth, and they seemed to refuse to get any closer than that, even when the ball hit ground and bounced toward one of them.

I searched for the source of the quotation and found it’s from a letter Thoreau wrote to Lidian Emerson on May 22, 1843. You can check out the interesting details of her life at

Some of us are being conscientious, some less so. But the reality of the crisis is beginning to sink in. Unless you think it’s a commie/liberal/fascist plot. Sigh.

I went for a long walk yesterday in the sunshine and fresh (if somewhat cold air). I had never seen so many people out for a walk at the same time in our neighbourhood! And yes, we gave ourselves plenty of space when we passed each other, but instead of being preoccupied with getting somewhere as fast as possible, or checking phones while walking, almost everyone smiled and said hello. There was an unspoken but shared understanding that we are all in this together.

It’s altogether beautiful, sad, inspiring, and frustrating. Social distancing is the ultimate practice of balance and meditation, manifested in the real world.

At least we still have virtual contact (coffee dates by Facebook have become a habit!) And the time to connect with loved ones – no excuse.
Thankfully my dog and I don’t have to maintain any distance – furry hugs make for great sustenance.

We’ve been taking lots of walks, and seeing others do the same. People always seem to smile or wave, even the cars slowly driving past us. So much more camaraderie now.

We’ve had more encounters of late on walks in the village in which people seem friendlier and take the time to wave or say hello. A bit ironic!

Yes, me too! Think it’s a paradigm shift to a greater sense of friendly community kindness and people are so happy to see other people!
