win the sky.

this tree

so stately so old

appears to have a face

when up close

quietly watching

over those resting below

“the tree is more than first a seed, then a stem, then a living trunk, and then dead timber.

the tree is a slow, enduring force straining to win the sky.”

~Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Wisdom of the Sands, translated from French by Stuart Gilbert

  1. I have a photo of an old wonderful tree, it’s arms reaching across the sky, the earth and the universe, and THAT photo is planned for the future card when my mum dies. She is that tree: Giving shelter, comfort, light or shade to all who come into her orbit….
I have read all his writings in French, German and English. Exupéry doesn’t age.
