herbert smith lived in hawaii in the 1890s
120+ years ago he took pictures of this bay surrounded by palm trees and small shipping huts
here is the bay many years later
–
on this date in 1959, hawaii became a state
i have yet to visit
but plan to spend time
in a hut
under a palm tree
in hawaii
on a bay
one day.

I think there are few places more beautiful than the Hawaiian islands and I hope that visit is in your future. But take your laptop, as I do not want to do without your posts!

Kind of sad… the difference in the two pictures. It’s amazing how nothing ever stays the same.
It looks like you may not be able to visit a hut in Hawaii after all- you might have to settle for a modern day high rise!

yes, there certainly is something lost in all that. i’m going to start looking for a hut now, for when the time is right, there must still be one somewhere –

Putting my feet on the Hawaii soil with loved ones has been two of the best trips of my life, Beth. It’s beauty is everything you hope and dream.

Been twice: once to Oahu and once to Kauai. Really want to go back and see Molokai. The air is so amazingly soft.

I like the way it was in the old picture. Imagine if that very picture was in color.
I look forward to your visit!

I remember reading a story (perhaps in Reader’s Digest??) where people were on vacation in Hawaii. They were at a red light. It turned green. The people in front of them never moved, they were looking around. Everyone sat behind that non-moving car in Hawaii, no one honked, no one got upset. I mean, what was the point? They were in paradise. 🙂 I always loved that story.

Beth, Maui is my favorite place in the whole world! So far anyway. Thought I wouldn’t go again after Paul died, but it’s drawing me back. Hopefully next year…

Wow. The only constant we can depend on is change… It’s like an entirely different world now.

our middle son has lived in Hawaii for several years, so we have been fortunate to visit him a few times. It’s amazing how green things have become over the past 120 years 🙂
you could not have made up a better quote to go with those pictures…

What a difference there is between the two photos!! I have never been but my son has visited Hawaii at least twice. That’s why I have the Albizia tree in my yard. He fell in love with them there and had to plant one here. The get HUGE. Oh my.
