on this day in 1964
a perennial favorite of children
“mary poppins,” premiered.
julie andrews as mary, sang and danced her way through this happy film
her famous ‘just a spoonful of sugar’ song danced through my head
as i continued my foray into bread making with my latest project
cinnamon swirl donut bread
i think mary would have been quite impressed/horrified by all the sugar involved in this one
is was not only a sweet donut loaf
but was swirled with cinnamon, sugar, and molasses
and in the final stages
the entire loaf
still warm from the oven
was dipped in melted butter
then rolled in a mix of brown sugar, white sugar, and cinnamon
that melted together
creating an outer crust
this was not a loaf for the feint of heart
nor amateur sugar-eater
a little went a long way, but pretty tasty, all in all.
next up – beer bread
i wonder what movie from my past that experience will trigger.
“if god hadn’t meant for us to eat sugar, he wouldn’t have invented dentists.”

i know! and i’m sure it would push many people over the top, just a small bit is good, and then of course, there’s the butter again -)

Poor Dick Van Dyke, none of the other actors/director told his that his Cock-er-nee (Cockney) was REALLY bad. They just let him get on with it instead of bringing in a voice coach. That wasn’t kind at all!

i didn’t notice as a child, now it stands out a bit, but is kind of charming

It sounds dreadful to English ears, trust me! I am glad that people in other countries were none the wiser.

Beer bread is delicious!

it actually was not too overly sweet, but a small piece is plenty. glad to know about the beer bread. is it best to use a mild/light beer or something more robust? what would you recommend?
LikeLiked by 1 person
I tried a mild and slightly more robust and I did one with cheese. All were delicious. I want to try one with say a Guinness.

exactly my approach ). i don’t eat a lot of sugar, but when i do, it has to be worth it – usually chocolate as you know by now

So funny! I can’t decide if this sounds delicious or way too much. I’m a big fan of cinnamon bread though.
And I’ll have to remember about Mary Poppins–a dear friend of mine went to see it by herself as a child, and she loved it so much that she stayed and watched it again while her parents were frantically looking for her. 😀

i think you’d like it then, but a little is plenty! that is so funny about your friend

Sounds flippin’ amazing..but then again, I am restricting sugar right now so even salad dressing sounds like dessert to me!

it was, and i don’t eat much sugar either, so it was super sweet for me, but a taste was good

It is surprisingly provocative. I find that I give many different cultures a lot of lee-way when it comes to things I don’t understand well or totally agree with..it’s like a respect thing. This idea was really challenged for me as I watched Matchmaker. At the end I asked my husband..is it OK to just come straight out and tell you all of the things I find absolutely reprehensible about this??? (And there was a lot!!)

This looks and sounds absolutely incredible. Since I don’t put sugar in my iced tea or my hot tea and since I don’t drink coffee, I think I can deal with a few more spoonfuls of sugar to make a loaf of bread like this. Is it a difficult recipe? I love Ralph Nader’s quite!
