World Science Day for Peace and Development

Celebrated every November 10th, World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the important role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. It also underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives.

By linking science more closely with society, World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to ensure that citizens are kept informed of developments in science. It also underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable.

In 2020, the Day will be devoted to the theme of Science for and with society.

“ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge:

it is those who know little, and not those who know much,

who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science.”

  1. Here’s a little more of that quotation, which is from The Descent of Man: “It has often and confidently been asserted, that man’s origin can never be known: but ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science. The conclusion that man is the co-descendant with other species of some ancient, lower, and extinct form, is not in any degree new.”

  2. that rings so true. I gave my day yesterday to an old friend and we took a 4h cruise together, we had a total of 6.5hrs between the 2 of us and as much as I love this crazy bird, I nearly gave up on her because she’s taking in EVERY opinion on EVERYTHING and just bladders on (always saying But kiki, ppl say also this and this…. – knowing she triggers me to scream at her: Use your own brilliant head of yours instead of parrotting what idiots say).
Should I send her this Darwin quote? I don’t know – she might not know WHY…..

  3. When I was young, I was clever at science, and I became an industrial chemist…. as my life’s journey panned out, I think the Knowledge that I had acquire during those early years, enable me to be clever enough to cope with the life changing events that occurred later on..

  4. So, that is a theme day I welcome! It is very necessary to raise awareness in a way that everybody understands and takes to heart in order to stand behind the development of science for a better health of the planet and its inhabitants…. not for the wallet of a few!
