writing desk.

Standard

what you might imagine it to be vs. what it might quite possibly be.

i recently listened to this book written and read by stephen king, and loved every minute of it-

a mix of his personal story and very straight shooting practical advice.

“It starts with this: put your desk in the corner, and every time you sit down there to write,

remind yourself why it isn’t in the middle of the room.

Life isn’t a support system for art. It’s the other way around.”

Stephen King

Amazon book review summary: Short and snappy as it is, Stephen King’s On Writing really contains two books: a fondly sardonic autobiography and a tough-love lesson for aspiring novelists.

  1. I am giggling so much right now at your illustration! Thank you, Beth.

(also, On Writing: yeah! One of those rare books that I keep giving away – er, because I think it’s good, not because of the opposite. Others include… Tom Drury’s End of Vandalism, Jon Savage’s Teenage and Steve Roud’s The English Year. So, do with this knowledge as you see fit :))

  2. Ha! My desk IS organized…sort of:) I read Stephen King’s book on writing and loved it. Great advice. I loaned it to a friend and never got it back. That’s a sure sign of a good book:) She wanted to keep it.

  3. BETH, who has allowed you to enter my ‘office’? Honestly, I don’t even remember where my writing desk is, it’s gone under completely with tremendous piles of papers, reading, lists, DVDs to watch, invoices to pay, cards to write, Sudokus and compilations of anything and everything…. I couldn’t find the DVD player for days. Also the only thing missing on the right hand drawing is my HUGE and very beautiful bowl from Portugal which is filled to the rim with markers, pens, pencils, felt writing tools, stickers, sticky tapes and notes, etc etc etc
The book sounds interesting and worth buying but since I don’t intend to write one, I’m good!

  4. Dr. French recommended Stephen King’s book and I started it. I think I’d do better with audible though. Getting to that point. I have a desk for office supplies and files but I can’t sit there. It’s always covered with stuff needing to go out the back door. ;( So the laptop in the recliner for this old body work much better. Sometimes, like this morning, I wake at an ungodly hour and write in bed. That way I don’t wake my daughter in her room. She’s not a early morning person. 😉 I think the writing desk may be a thing of the past. At least mine. 😉

  5. The only time I ever got written up for in all my years as a teacher was I once had a messy room. I admit I was a bit of a slob with stacks of paper everywhere, but really??? You’ve got nothing better to worry about than this? The kids aren’t safe, happy, and learning, but thank goodness the teacher’s desk is clean. 🤣

  7. I don’t know if you’re a twitterer…a tweeter…a person who tweets. I wasn’t until recently and I haven’t the foggiest what I’m doing but…BUT…Mr. King is a pretty great account to follow if you’re into such things. Thanks for the book tip – definitely will check it out!
