i have always loved alphabets
when i was young
one of my favorite days ever
was when i could finally
decode the letters and read words
i love alphabets created out of every imaginable material, and alpha art and images of all kinds
today i tried to look up the word for someone who loves alphabets
and there was nothing to be found
the closest i could come was for someone who loves words:
What do you call a person who loves words?
A logophile is a person who loves words; a word nerd.
Because it’s not all that commonly known,
logophile is probably most commonly used by logophiles themselves.
(of which i am one)
but alas, ironically, no word for someone who loves the letters that make up every word.

Letters are also sometimes referred to as graphemes. So, I say we introduce a new word into the language: Graphemophile – noun; a lover of letters. Fun post, Beth!

i was’nt very good at English when I was young, and struggled to learn the alphabet back then … so for me it is quite surprising that I have ended up being a writer … although I still have difficulty with spelling, but now I know how to use the dictionary….

Beth, it’s our day today – you’ve found another logophile and me too, i’ve found one…. I would go even further and maybe THAT’s a word: Languageophile….?! 🙂
I was never allowed to play with food and I don’t intend to start now – but I play with beautiful arrangement and interesting combination of food – as I do with words!

And did your grandma buy boxes of dried alphabet pasta and teach you to sort through the letters, glue them to popsicle sticks in the form of words and cover them in glitter to make bookmarks?…or was that just me? 😂 Letters make the world go round 🌎

I did all that and love to play with them with my class

Ooh, I relate to this. I love letters ( and the words they make, of course). I love decorative fonts, too, and have had fun designing my own. I really love the alphabet made of sticks that you’ve shown here! I once made an alphabet of lace….You’ve just reminded me to see if i still have pictures of it! And I do remember buying a tin of Alphabetti Spaghetti once too, just so that I could “write” something with the letters (on a piece of toast). A silly but fun exercise!
Anyway, I’m glad to have discovered your blog. I stumbled upon it while following wordpress’s little list of suggestions ( one of which was “spiders”), and your post about Spider music ensnared my curiosity (which i suppose is apt given the the spiderweb theme). Thankyou for the inspiring posts!

Aww, thankyou so much. Don’t feel that you must follow my blog back, however ( although i am very grateful if you have done! Thanking you 🙂 ). I would follow this blog you have here regardless. I’ve been looking for inspiring blogs that spark wonder and creativity….my rule is that if i stumble upon a blog and like at least 3 of the posts immediately then I must follow! So, follow i did. I look forward to reading more. Well wishes from Australia!

Maybe ‘litteraphile’ ? Litteras is ‘letter’ in Latin. I, too, am a logophile.

I don’t remember playing with letters as a kid, but by high school I was certainly writing a lot — stories, journals, letters, etc. Certainly needed letters to do that.

there may not be such a word, Beth, but there should be: the letters of the alphabet are the building blocks of words which all readers rely on: without the letters literature would crumble into chaos —

I still try to spell words when I eat Alpha Bits. Even sixty-two-year-olds like to make words from their cereal.

This isn’t quite about letters qua letters, but Judith Flanders recently published A Place For Everything: The Curious History of Alphabetical Order, which is about how western culture adopted its current understanding of the alphabet as a default way to organize things. A lot of fascinating thoughts about how to make things findable, and how the “natural” way to do that evolves over time and in context.

It’s interesting that there is not a word for people who love letters. Maybe you should come up with your own and submit it to Webster
