Messages at NYC’s Union Square after the 9/11 attack – North Sullivan

“it has been said that time heals all wounds. i don’t agree. the wounds remain.
time – the mind, protecting its sanity –
covers them with some scar tissue and the pain lessens,
but it is never gone.”

Ivor, Cohen is (was) always ‘just right’ with his work. There’s a reason I own every CD he ever made. This is another proof.

I have always disliked the expression, “Now you/we can begin to heal.”
As if it’s all OK now. As if there is a time limit on grieving.
I don’t choose to continue feeling sad or forget. Sorrow may be painful but it is the essence of being human. I pity those that lack this quality.

There are a few events, in my lifetime anyway, that I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard: the Kennedy assassinations; Dr. King; John Lennon; the moon landing; the Challenger disaster; 9/11 is the granddaddy of them all. We heal, but carry a limp or a scar…whatever metaphor works.

I was in New York twenty years ago and have shared pictures of my experience there for the first time just now on my blog, including similar photos I took in Union Square…people signing long rolls of butcher block paper and leaving memorials through the area…

The scar tissues covering the wound have a tendency to open from time to time and reveal the wound. The pain from the wound may become numb with time but it never goes away.

I agree with your comment. Some wounds run too deep to ever heal.

Physically, I have scar tissues under the seemingly healed skin. So I understand the concept of of scars. They’re never gone. Good quote, Beth.

No one learns, no one tries
Hate and evil thrive
Pain festers like maggots and flies.
Those left alive
Need to change the course
Finally rewrite the past 💜
