baby talk.

Standard

i hear it over and over again

even coming out of my own mouth

and wonder how and why

we ever began the tradition

of talking to our pets in baby talk.

they must consider us to be quite simple people

ever working on our vocabulary and articulation

always hoping that some day

we might master our own language.

“i’ve seen a look in dogs’ eyes,

a quickly vanishing look of amazed contempt,

and i am convinced that basically dogs think humans are nuts.”

  1. Wonderful comments, Beth. We’re on our 4th rescue dog and have talked that way to each one. Actually, my wife talks the baby talk and I just talk to them, hoping beyond hope that, one day, the dog will talk back and we can have a conversation about Life. Hadn’t happened….yet😉

  2. For some reason, Beth, I have bestowed upon our cherished rescue mutt Ellie B the voice of a Brooklynite, so she converses with my dear wife Karen and myself in a manner of a dog that walks the streets of the dear New York City borough of my past …

  3. Here’s something. I talk to Bear in complete sentences and NEVER baby talk. Teddy gets baby talk. Is it because Bear is so large and Teddy so small or because as I’ve gotten to know Bear I’ve learned she’s my partner and pal. Teddy? Definite a pet, a very intelligent pet, but a pet and the best boy, who’s the best boy? 😉

  4. Totally agree – I always have to take myself back when ‘meeting up’ with a pet. Great quote too….
Let’s behave in a way that our pets don’t have to be ashamed by our presence 🙂
