ancestors.

Standard

we’ve been friends for over 40 years

at this gathering

following a recent loss

we came to realize

that between the four of us

we have but one surviving birth parent

making us close to all being orphans

we paid tribute

offered gratitude

to those who came before us

with all of their strengths and challenges

for had they not lived

there would be no us

nor our children

nor our grandchildren

nor those yet to come.

“And, you know, the fact is, if you believe in evolution, we all have a common ancestor, and we all have a common ancestry with the plant in the lobby. This is what evolution tells us. And, it’s true. It’s kind of unbelievable.” Jeff Hawkins

  2. Beautiful post. My grandpa passed away on Monday in hospital with covid and joined my grandma. I chanced across this poem today by Rumi. This is how I would die, into the love I have for you all; as pieces of cloud dissolved in sunlight.

  3. Losing a parent is very difficult. My mom has been gone 15 years. One of the things we tend to forget is that as we grow up, we also watch our parents grow older. Treasure each moment with them and the memories of those who have gone before us….

  4. I didn’t know who any of my ancestors were until a couple years ago. Now, I have a fascinating research project. And I have two full brothers and a half-sister. Pretty amazing development this late in my life. My descendants are impressed 🙂

  5. This past summer, we completed our 11th family reunion. We hold one every three years. Our parents started this tradition, and now just their four sons are left. I suspect my parents’ grandchildren will carry the torch forward once we’re all gone.
