           I wondered whether I should start this toast by saying, “When I was here in 1776…”

During the queen’s trip to the United States in 2007, President George W. Bush stumbled over his lines at the welcome ceremony, accidentally stating that Elizabeth had helped celebrate the U.S. bicentennial in 1776, rather than 1976 — adding 200 years to her age. At a later speech, attended by Bush, the queen playfully teased the President, provoking much laughter from him and the assembled dignitaries.

  7. The Big Picture of her 70 years will be remembered in different ways. Discussed and Debated in great halls by great people and in history books. But it will be the many little pictures that will fill the homes and kitchens of little people that will make the legends.

  19. I remember the goodle days when GWB’s malapropisms upset us. Good times. Maybe if QE2 had been around in 1776 instead of George 3, we’d be mourning the death of our sovereign instead of doing what we’re going now (AAAAAAAAAAAAAA 🤪)

  27. That anecdote provides a lot of insight into her character. I can imagine others getting offended, but the Queen realized it was an accidental remark. Treating situations like that and appreciating the humor in them lowers the temperature.
