signs of change are all around us.
—
“the crickets felt it was their duty to warn everybody that summertime cannot last forever.
even on the most beautiful days in the whole year –
the days when summer is changing into autumn –
the crickets spread the rumor of sadness and change.”
– E.B. White
Luckily, there is beauty to be found in every season. Just not ready to give up summer quite yet. Wonderful post!

I must not be in tune. I don’t hear the sadness. Just the chatter of the crickets as they chirp to one another.
As for fall…..I know where your heart stands on fall as well! I’m ready!

I’d rather have fall/ autumn than summer. Perhaps crickets 🦗 feel otherwise.

The sights and smells of autumn are the most glorious of the seasons, in my opinion. Getting older, and much more appreciate the earths needing to settle in after last display of delight during that time we call autumn. Time has taught us that each season is only temporary and is necessary in order to give us the wonders that mother nature has for us.

Do you happen to know what kind of leaf it is?

I found it in my front yard, and doesn’t match any of the trees there, but looks like it might be from a chokeberry shrub in the side yard, the leaves turn red in the fall. do you have a way of positively identifying it?

Many people use PictureThis™ and iNaturalist™ to identify plants. I’ve never tried either one, but you could give it a shot. Just make sure that any plant the programs suggest actually grow in your area.

Yep. Alder and maple leaves are beginning to fall. We’re driving to Portland today, through the Coast Range and are hoping for some color, but it’s a bit early for that.

I’ve never considered crickets from that perspective, but it seems spot on. Trees are changing color here in southern Minnesota.

Dear Mr. White, Usually I love your words but this time? I don’t see the sadness, at most, a melancholy beauty. Your friend, Martha

A beautiful quote, Beth. I hadn’t heard this one before and it seems melancholy for White. But autumn for all its glory is a time of summer’s parting. Thanks for sharing!
