yesterday we took a walk against hate
my daughter, granddaughter, colleagues, friends, students, families, strangers
all for the same reason.
—
“no one is born hating another person
because of the color of his skin, or his background, or religion.
people must learn to hate,
and if they can learn to hate,
they can be taught to love,
for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

You could not have picked a better person to quote about love than Nelson! Great post, Beth!

Someone who knows how to do it should make a “Walk against Hate” a national event, each of us being with our own family, friends and community to do the same thing at the same time. Imagine…

I would be so in on participating in this walk. Thanks to you and your family for letting your voices be heard. After watching the first installment of Ken Burns’ documentary on the Holocaust last evening, your positive actions resonate. I highly recommend the documentary. It’s so revealing and unfortunately relatable to today.

It was good for all ages to participate and for all kinds of people. They talked about the documentary yesterday before we walked

As the song in “South Pacific” said:
“You’ve got to be taught
To hate and fear
You’ve got to be taught
From year to year
It’s got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You’ve got to be carefully taught”
We must teach love and respect instead. I can’t think of a better way than a community walk.

Bravo! The only way to counter this hatred and ugliness in our society today to to join together to show we don’t accept it!

Beautiful. Sometimes I wonder if hate is a way we hide from pain of lost love. To break away from pain without hating the person who inflicted it? Huge challenge.

You and I are on the same page with this. Since I taught for many years, this subject has often crossed my mind. When I taught 2nd grade, I never saw one example of hate because of skin color, ethnicity, religion, etc. Not that they don’t have fights and disagreements, but their spats never surround those topics. By the time they’re in 5th and 6th grade (two grades I taught a lot during my career), they are much more aware of differences. This includes wealth, color, and a variety of other differences. It’s obviously learned behavior.

I agree. Indeed, hate is a learned behavior.
I taught second and third grade diverse groups of students and saw my students’ acceptance of all as equals.
Whenever there was any discord among students, I would sit them down and explain. We may be different but when we are hurt, we all bleed red. It worked. The little ones would think for a moment and understand.

My ADD is getting out of hand here. I read a post, hit like and my mind wanders off leaving the page open and the comment not typed. I had very prejudiced parents because they learned to be that way. I looked around and decided that just didn’t work for me. I guess my children decided my way worked for them too. Hate is such a waste of energy. It helps no one.
