“Don’t you imagine the leaves dream now how comfortable it will be to touch the earth instead of the nothingness of the air and the endless freshets of wind? And don’t you think the trees, especially those with mossy hollows, are beginning to look for the birds that will come – six, a dozen – to sleep inside their bodies? And don’t you hear the goldenrod whispering goodbye, the everlasting being crowned with the first tuffets of snow? The pond stiffens and the white field over which the fox runs so quickly brings out its long blue shadows. The wind wags its many tails. And in the evening the piled firewood shifts a little, longing to be on its way.”

A beautiful perspective of the season. Someday I hope to write like that. Enjoyed this, Beth!

Lovely writing from Mary. October did not arrive quietly in Beetley. Strong, gusty winds blew away the rain and left us with sunny skies so far.
Best wishes, Pete.

Sometimes our imagination is all we have to make things so. Our imaginations make us hopeful and sometimes hoping makes it so.

The wind wags its many tails. – Mary Oliver, OF COURSE! Ain’t she marvellous?
She really paints pictures with her words. Although I never had a firewood oven, I can hear it shifting a little, longing to be on its way.
And once I owned wrapping paper with such seasonal artwork printed on it – a lovely pairing with MO’s words.

Of course that is Mary Oliver. What a gift with words she had!
Our October came in with a bit of a snap. It got cold really fast but has calmed down now… At least we saw over 70 yesterday… going steadily downhill as the weekend progresses. Still. Such a beautiful month, isn’t it?

October is a jealous mistress, beautiful and enticing. She is the prelude to the biting cold of winter.

October has a lot of good things to like Breast Cancer Awareness month, changes of the colors for fall, Halloween if you par take, and my birthday lol but my favorite is the leaves changes and it finally cools to off before it starts getting cold.

A beautiful piece that reminded me of Keats’ poem To Autumn, a season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.

“The pond stiffens.” What a unique way of saying it. Fall has certainly arrived here. Blindingly clear days in the 60s, fog-muffled days in the 40s, tears of the sun falling from the trees and skittering down the streets. How I love October!

I am sure the leaves are, uh, releaved to be able to fall just as they are probably very excited as little buds to be reaching for the sun.

Such a poetic way to describe October. Finally, we have had two sunny days again and that made such a difference. You smell fall, and the colors are exploding from one day to the next in the warm golden light.
