We used to have ‘Sleep Time’ in the afternoons at my first school. Not all of us went to sleep, but we would lay there quietly for 30 minutes or so. π
Best wishes, Pete.
There is so much stimulation in the world, and so much technology that even young hands can master, that we almost encourage our children to be busy, busy, busy! I vote that all elementary grades instill a quiet time in class (because I’m pretty sure parents for the most part won’t do it at home). I love – in fact, I crave – my quiet time!
This one hit me, Beth. How true. I always worry about those kids who’ve got activities planned (not by them) from the moment they wake until it’s time for bed. They must be exhausted on a whole ‘nother level. Let them be!
I remember being barefoot in the Park. Grass tickling my toes, stones and the wind whispering over my bare ankles. Nirvana. Why don’t we do it more often?
“Mom, I’m bored. There’s nothing to do.”
“Good.”
I look up across the neighbor’s yard. The tall deciduous trees of the forest call out. “Mom, I’m going to the woods.”
“Be back for dinner.”
My granddaughter stayed the weekend and there was no quietness, however, I taught her how to play scrabble and we played both days. We didnβt keep score but it was so much fun and quiet. Lol
In youth, stillness is a learned trait, not a natural skill. A life lesson worth sharing with our younglings.
