MATILDA WORMWOOD
from roald dahl’s ‘matilda’. not that matilda is only interested in children’s books – before she even gets to school, she’s onto adult classics such as ernest hemingway’s ‘the old man and the sea’ and ‘nicholas nickleby’ by charles dickens. an avid reader who manages to outsmart the horrible miss trunchbull? well, of course we love matilda.

a little pocket calculator
can do it why shouldn’t I?’

great answer, mark. the aussies were going to name their baby ‘matilda’ after the famous song if they had a girl, but it was not in the cards and didn’t work as well for a boy )

Their intentions were good, your Aussies, Beth. I think Joey is pretty great too. If my memory is right. ???

you are on the right track, mark. joey is what a baby kangaroo is called and what i affectionately call my young aussie grandies. they are actually magnus and felix, two names with stories of their own. )

Those are great names, Beth. Marvelous. You called them Joeys, though, for Skippy. I knew that!

I love the book, the author and Matilda’s spunky nature! I would like to see this done in an animated movie, since the movie with real actors was not my favorite version. I think it needs to be redone more like Roald Dahl would have created Matilda’s character and the way she would look.
Happy International Children’s Book Day to you and hope you have a wonderful and fun Easter, Beth!
My oldest daughter, Skyler and Micah will be joining me to head towards Cleveland after she finishes work. The boys are psyched and so am I! xo

Hey Beth, have you written in children’s books, yet? If not, have you thought about it? May Matilda inspire you, along with many others. I did not know that this was international Children’s Books Day. Have a good weekend.

My oldest still loves Matilda, it makes her smile as a senior in high school. Reading is still my number one passion and go to get away. Other than blogs and lurking on Facebook, it’s all about the book too. Still. I love to lose myself in libraries and bookstores and I know it’s because of the awesome children’s books I got to read. Curious George, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, Matilda, Good Night Moon…Thank you for the reminder!

We’ve read almost all of Roald Dahl’s books and we never tire of them. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda are our favorites. Where would we be without books, without that “old man at the sea” and without words to make us escape into those pages just for a bit. Happy International Children’s Book Day to you too Beth!

I’m familiar with Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” but I had never read “Matilda” before. So I went online and listened to an excerpt of “Matilda” as read by Kate Winslet. What fascinated me was that Matilda’s last name “Wormwood” is the same as the weary teacher in the Calvin and Hobbes cartoon. Miss Wormwood was named after the apprentice devil in C.S. Lewis’ “The Screwtape Letters.” Does Matilda’s last name have a similar origin?
