flavors.

who doesn’t remember these?

the school treat 

vanilla 

with

chocolate or strawberry swirl

ice cream sundae

in a little cup

after finishing off 

your slice of school pizza

but the best part 

wasn’t

the icy crystals on top

after being  

frozen and refrozen

in the old school fridge

or

the little lid 

you had to pry off

to reveal the treat

or

the pockets of flavor

running through it like a river

no

the best part

was 

the little wooden spoon

that came with it

tearing open

the wrapper

using it to scoop out

every drop of ice cream

 the flavor ribbons

right on

the inside curve

of the little cup

something

about it

didn’t taste

the same

without

that little wood spoon

it 

added to the flavor

made it perfect

i can still

taste

that spoon

even now.

dia de los muertos.

one of our classrrom families
came in to teach us about
this very moving and beautiful tradition.
what a lovely way to celebrate and remember our loved ones.
Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday celebrated on November 1 and 2 and is a time to remember and honor deceased loved ones. 
The holiday has its roots in pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican cultures,  and it is a unique and beautiful blend of indigenous and Catholic traditions.
On Dia de los Muertos, families build altars in their homes and cemeteries to honor their deceased loved ones. The altars are decorated with photos of the deceased, as well as their favorite foods, drinks, and other belongings. Families also visit cemeteries to clean and decorate graves, and to leave offerings for their loved ones.
Dia de los Muertos is a time for celebration, not mourning. It is a time to remember the lives of loved ones who have passed on, and to celebrate the bond that continues to connect them to the living.

“in celebration of the national toy hall of fame’s 25th anniversary, the public will have the chance to choose one of this year’s inductees from the so-called ‘forgotten five.’  the toys – the fisher-price corn popper, my little pony, pez dispensers, the pogo stick, and transformers – are ‘icons of the play world’ and frequent finalists, but have never made the cut. “now one of these will make the hall and, for the first time it will be purely in the hands of the voting public,” chief curator, christopher bench said in a press release.

repost below from 5 years ago, now the 40th anniversary of this film

35 years ago ‘flashdance’ was released

and it emerged again recently

in honor of international dance day

 i loved this movie

 had the shoes, the ripped up sweatshirt, the perm

though my dancing style

was a bit different  

from this welder by day/dancer by night

and i didn’t live in a cool loft

or have an eccentric dog

or ride my bike to work

or look at all alike

but other than that

we were like sisters.

blockbuster or bust.

it was ladies’ night at my friend’s house

we had a bit of wine and chat and lots of laughter

the hostess suggested that we should get a movie

and try as she might

she could not remember its name

but it was ‘really good’

couldn’t remember the main stars

‘but we would recognize them immediately’

she put in a call to blockbuster

where they had every current movie

 the kind person/movie nerd at the store

answered the phone

the experts were standing by

 to help her figure out the title

when we heard her explain

that it was really good

had 2 popular stars

and a 3-word title

beginning with the word ‘the’

we absolutely lost it

the poor person on the phone

worked for 20 minutes

trying to jog her memory for more details

finally giving up and apologizing

now, that’s customer service

i really miss blockbuster

something about the excitement

going to pick out a movie

families, couples, friends, singles

taking turns and negotiating

hoping the one you really wanted was still there

so much comedy and drama all in one place.

 loved this view of the toy department at the store during the Christmas season.

toys were displayed on shelves, tables, and display cases,

with decorations featuring elves, a sleigh, and reindeer in background.

this is where i went every year

all dressed up fancy

to buy little gifts (with help from the elves) for my family

to see santa

to have a special lunch

 always, always amazed

by the glamour and magic of it all.
