– great news –
there are now
officially
two words
that rhyme with purple.
hirple, meaning “to limp” or “walk awkwardly,”
and
curple, an old Scots word for the hindquarters of a horse.
now about orange……

Ha! Great pictures Beth, so vibrant. As to rhyming orange, there is a helicopter medial transport service here in Ontario Canada called Ornge that would rhyme http://www.ornge.ca/Pages/Default.aspx

No, thank you for the purpleness. Prince would be proud of you.
So off topic but it’s a brainworm that won’t go away… Your readers may have the answer… As you guys measure recipes in cups and nails in pennyweights, build bridges in eighths of an inch and fly planes in gallons — measurements that would not be strange to 17th century folk — how come you chose to give up driving carts and carriages on the left like in the old country and took up driving on the right? …and when for that matter? This has been bugging me for so long and no one has yet. Maybe I should compose a poem.
Inserts smiley face emoticon at this point, except he doesn’t…

here is an explanation that may fill in the blanks on this issue. part practicality, pride and circumstance.

From BBC Radio 4, our very own PBS, comes a list of words that may fascinate, or not, from snollygoster to biffen.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/2xL1gH6FcyCtYH2NM6zYhTK/lost-for-words-14-expressions-that-have-vanished?intc_type=singletheme&intc_location=radio4&intc_campaign=radio4infour&intc_linkname=article_expressions_contentcard3
I am still pondering the world standards rehash you kindly forwarded of the ‘folks are right handed and people in France and America had more animals pulling their carts’ arguments, both of which in my not so humble opinion are incorrect post-rationalization. And if revolutionary fervour meant eschewing driving on the left then why keep pennyweights and all the other Jacobean baggage? And of course you can hate Iran and still like caviar, despise France and drink champagne… How great would the unique symbolic value of driving on the right have to be to offset the disruption of more than a century and a half of driving on the left in Boston, Philadelphia and other big cities on the east coast? Rhetorical question, just out there.

Love that purple picture.
May I suggest turtle and myrtle?
If you were from Norfolk in the UK you could have fertile because they pronounce it furtle
I am working on orange, only one that I can come up with Erange – a river in South Africa.

curple – part of a horse saddle
furpule – to have a romantic crush on someone
turple – to be cocky or annoying
hirple – Scottish for having a limp
murple – an Italian progressive rock band.
Still working on orange. I have got no Saturday chores done thanks to you!

Lovely pictures so really purple. Great rhyming words, but for orange…. just never put it on the end of a verse, I would suggest! 🙂

Talking of new words, I stayed over at some friends last week and in the guest bedroom they had a great bedside cabinet. “Actually” they said, “it’s a Georgian purdonium”. I had to google that one for sure, but it’s a box to keep the coal in.

I’m sure there are some damaged curples that had some hirple moments.

Beautiful photos – thanks for the word hirple, after a long day I hirple to my car and go home. My darn knees. My chiropractor called it another word – chimping- as I walk like a chimpanzee. Now I have a defifinitve word. Enjoy your Labor Day weekend.

great, somehow i think it’s more powerful than chimping )

Less demeaning, but after a long day up and down and walking around, I do walk from side to side favoring one knee over another – some days are better than others –

great vocabulary words for the day and a cool word game too but I’m not really sure there is a word in the whole of the world that will ever rhyme with Orange unless we take the subjection of the two word clue from the gentleman above me but I’m not sure that would really work or we could never put it at the end of the verse and then there is no worry. Great post as always and I learned something too. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend for Tuesday we all head back to school. Kat

An imbalance in the universe has been corrected. It’s interesting that both words were colors. Coincidence, or an evil plot to keep the universe out of balance?
