it has been one year
since the global pandemic coronavirus began to shut much of our nation down
so much loss and so many sacrifices and lessons learned
everyone waiting for a return to fully living life
with hope on the horizon.

Here too – it has been a rather long and yet a very eventful (and for you guys a terribly sad) year.

It seemed longer than that — and it was. There really are 31,536,000 seconds in a normal year, but 2020 was a leap year, so it had 31.622.400 seconds.

But the extra day came before the lockdown, so from a year ago to now was only 31,536,000 seconds after all.

I count Friday the 13th as the one year mark… That’s when, for us, everything shut down. Crazy year we’ve had – all of us – around the world!

When you think about it, ‘seconds’ is a weird word. What about ‘firsts’ and ‘thirds?’ How did we arrive at counting ‘seconds’? Why do we call a sixtieth of a minute a second?

On March 8, 2020 my wife and I were at the airport in Seattle – heading home after flying in a day earlier for my Mom’s birthday…there was a strange sense of dread in the boarding area as people quietly discussed this “virus” that had settled in on the city, unsure of what was next…little did we know that two days later the world would shut down…

There was a real nasty virus that spread around the L.A. office in November/December 2019, took people out for over a week, and one was diagnosed with pneumonia. All survived, and all the symptoms matched the ‘rona.

Only a year? It has seemed like 10, especially when I look at how my grandkids changed and all the things I missed in their lives.

There is a lot of hope. I feel a lot of people are just wanted to return to what was a year ago. I hope some people have learned some new perspectives.

It feels shocking to read this even though I know it is true. Did you purposely write,
“since the since the” on the first line as a stuttering of realization?
Hang in there.

it does seem shocking, and oops, not that clever to have created the stuttering effect. thanks for the heads up, I read it a number of times and never noticed it. )

I thought that maybe it was your flare for creative writing. Most people don’t notice that type of typo. I don’t know why my brain always sees it. Then I am never sure if I should say something or not.
I always love your posts.

yes, some are very good at that, adding a poetic or dramatic effect, this one was simply a tired brain that refused to see it, on my part. we are our own worst editors at times. trust me when I tell you that I appreciate it when someone says something or asks about it. thank you!
