“the first week of august hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year,
like the highest seat of a ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning.
the weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring,
and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn,
but the first week of august is motionless, and hot.
it is curiously silent, too,
with blank white dawns and glaring noons,
and sunsets smeared with too much color.”

Gosh, that is how it should be! We have never, to my knowledge, had a summer as ‘bad’ as this, tremendous storms, floodings, damages beyond our wildest imagination and I think, there was hardly one week of not having days and days with no rain.
BUT we are not complaining, because WE are not suffering. My tiny, tiny garden patch next to our rental flat is washed out, the plants have no soil left to grab, what was there is eaten by slugs, but who cares?! We are in the ‘dry’ (inside!), we can buy those veggies for reasonable money as they are, contrary to my precious organic ‘no-longer-there’ plants, freely available….
The pic you got on pinterest is full of what the quote promises – great choice. Love it.
And anyhow, I wish YOU and all your readers, a wonderful August. We hope and wait – it will get more summery, I’m sure.

The poem well captures the feeling of August’s beginning. Some days of summer seem to streeeeetch for a long time. Then, when September arrives, I think: What happened to summer? It flew by!

I used to love when August came around ’cause my birthday is in Aug.
Not so fond of it any more. 😦 Too many birthdays.

Wonderful poem. Just love it. August has always been a little weird. Kind of a transition between fun, sun and freedom, and going back to school and real life. LOL Also my birthday month. Virgo for sure.

When August arrives, I shift into school thinking again and attempt to wake earlier and be more serious… but that lasts only for so long and I fall back into summer. Two weeks for me until summer ends and school restarts… and you? Stay well and joyous. Peace.

After a truly horrendous 2020, isn’t it strange that we are already SEVEN MONTHS through this new year? As for LA weather, we are indeed at the very top of the wheel and what a view!

It is shocking that we’re more than half way through!

August was the hottest part of Oklahoma summers. Here in Colorado it seems as if Nature is undecided about what to do next. Vicious heat a few days ago. Monsoon rains, floods, and mudslides yesterday.

I always loved “the dog days of summer” in August. It seems this year all the seasons have changed. We are in the Northwest and winter was mild, spring was dry and cool and summer has been hellishly hot and smoky. Rain came today for the first time in ages and it was welcome. But like Kiki I am grateful that we are still safe and at home. I even have veggies still growing in my garden!
