are always busy
little hands
hunting and gathering
collecting, counting, carrying
organizing, sorting,
moving, lining up
until it feels and looks just right.
or until recess ends.
whichever comes first.
and then there is a mad rush
to fill pockets, and mittens, and hands
with as much as they can hold
treasure to be transported home
to go through the whole process again.

It doesn’t take much to keep imaginative children entertained. At least as long as recess lasts. Fun post, Beth!

Mine always collected rocks. I can’t tell you how many rocks have had a bath courtesy of my washing machine.

Is focusing on acquisition something we learn or are we born with it? Pinecones and stones are pretty tempting.

Children always leave you wondering and learning. They have a special gift, that of being relaxed and concentrated at the same time.

Robin was right. We are still hunter-gatherers … until we’re old enough to have credit cards and become shopper-borrowers.

yes, it just develops organically and they all join in

I love to see kids doing this. When I cared for friends’ children many years ago, one little girl gathered stones in my yard, coiled a jump rope and, ta-da, she had created a snake and its eggs. I’ll always remember Meredith’s creativity.

I loved doing something like that. On a hike, I collected several big stones and rocks. Gosh, that was heavy but I made it and built something from then over and over once at home. Or I collected chestnuts and arranged them in various ways.

It’s a wonderful thing to see a kid find something he’s never seen before and then begin wondering about it, collecting it and asking about it. I love that so much.

great stuff. and robin williams, one of my all-time heros. thought of him when i listened to a talk with trevor noah. he was, as a comedian (but not only that) speaking about these professionals who are funny for every single person in the room, but after a show go home or to their hotel alone…. should you be interested to listen to it, it’s very very good and thought provoking, i might be able to find it for you.
