hunters and gatherers.

they quite naturally

are always busy

little hands

hunting and gathering

collecting, counting, carrying

organizing, sorting,

moving, lining up

until it feels and looks just right.

or until recess ends.

whichever comes first.

and then there is a mad rush

to fill pockets, and mittens, and hands

with as much as they can hold

treasure to be transported home

to go through the whole process again.

  1. I loved doing something like that. On a hike, I collected several big stones and rocks. Gosh, that was heavy but I made it and built something from then over and over once at home. Or I collected chestnuts and arranged them in various ways.

  2. *Whichever comes first.” Throw in the money-back guarantee, and I’m all in. I can see all the kids getting involved at recess. These things organically take off.

  4. great stuff. and robin williams, one of my all-time heros. thought of him when i listened to a talk with trevor noah. he was, as a comedian (but not only that) speaking about these professionals who are funny for every single person in the room, but after a show go home or to their hotel alone…. should you be interested to listen to it, it’s very very good and thought provoking, i might be able to find it for you.
