As days drag on and the sun still sets relatively early, you may be left wondering are the days truly getting longer? The short answer is, yes. But only by a few minutes. Each day in January we average an extra 2 minutes from the day prior.
By the end of February, we can expect an additional two hours and 30 minutes. February 28’s sunrise is at 7:20 A.M. And the sunset is at 6:30 P.M. The first 6 o’clock sunset of the year arrives on February 5.
As we ease closer to our longest day, June 21, we’ll gain an additional 6 hours and 41 minutes of daylight. The longest day of the year, the summer solstice on June 21, is 15 hours and 21 minutes long.
We’re on our way!

I’d settle for spring equinox, neither hot nor cold and day and night equal.

Still the sun rises rather late in this part of the world… Looking forwards to 7 am sunrises!

The longer the days get the more likely I may miss a sunset. But with the hours you and I keep, we will never miss a sunrise, my friend!

And as your days get longer ours get slowly shorter. It’s all a great big cycle isn’t it!

Still trying to come to terms that our daylight is still ending in the 4s. That’s offset by the fact that your (and formerly mine) morning lights begin later. Longer days ftw though.

Having terrible eyesight, I remarked pretty quickly that the evenings got lighter for a bit longer. And even if it were ‘just in my head’ as much of my life happens, it’s still ‘that’. Next year we’ll have an extra day in Feb to get longer!

I sometimes wish my life away in January and February, longing for the lighter evenings and dry days of summer. But experience also tells me that many summers do not live up to expectations. So I try to make the best of these dark, cold months.
Best wishes, Pete.

I love that we can anticipate, each day, more and more light. An unfolding, if you will.

I love math. So reassuring to see the progression that results from our spinning through space around a sun that blesses us.

I must disagree. The days do not get shorter and longer from one season to the next. it is the amount of daylight we are given that shortens and lengthens according to the seasons. (This is one of those things I love picking on people for stating incorrectly!)

What a great Vince Lombardi quote though it made no sense until I DDG’d it. Now, I’m claiming it.

Focus on the light. Yes, daylight hours are growing longer. I definitely notice here in Minnesota.

On Jan 19 1995 at 5.15 pm, I drove in the car with my mom. I said, look how much longer the daylight already stays. From that year on, January 19 is always a day when I look at the sky and appreciate the minutes of more daylight.

I’m one of those who doesn’t mind daylight getting shorter because it signifies my favorite time of year has started. Yet, I know a whole lot of folks who can’t wait for sunshine most all the day, and they like this time of year because it signifies their favorite part of the year will soon be here. To each their own. Gorgeous shot of the pier!

Fall’s always been my favorite season, not because of the shorter days but despite them. Thanks for the new meaning of “run for daylight.”
