daylight.

As days drag on and the sun still sets relatively early, you may be left wondering are the days truly getting longer? The short answer is, yes. But only by a few minutes. Each day in January we average an extra 2 minutes from the day prior.

By the end of February, we can expect an additional two hours and 30 minutes. February 28’s sunrise is at 7:20 A.M. And the sunset is at 6:30 P.M. The first 6 o’clock sunset of the year arrives on February 5.

As we ease closer to our longest day, June 21, we’ll gain an additional 6 hours and 41 minutes of daylight. The longest day of the year, the summer solstice on June 21, is 15 hours and 21 minutes long.

We’re on our way!

  1. Having terrible eyesight, I remarked pretty quickly that the evenings got lighter for a bit longer. And even if it were ‘just in my head’ as much of my life happens, it’s still ‘that’. Next year we’ll have an extra day in Feb to get longer!

  2. I sometimes wish my life away in January and February, longing for the lighter evenings and dry days of summer. But experience also tells me that many summers do not live up to expectations. So I try to make the best of these dark, cold months.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  3. I must disagree. The days do not get shorter and longer from one season to the next. it is the amount of daylight we are given that shortens and lengthens according to the seasons. (This is one of those things I love picking on people for stating incorrectly!)

  4. On Jan 19 1995 at 5.15 pm, I drove in the car with my mom. I said, look how much longer the daylight already stays. From that year on, January 19 is always a day when I look at the sky and appreciate the minutes of more daylight.

  5. I’m one of those who doesn’t mind daylight getting shorter because it signifies my favorite time of year has started. Yet, I know a whole lot of folks who can’t wait for sunshine most all the day, and they like this time of year because it signifies their favorite part of the year will soon be here. To each their own. Gorgeous shot of the pier!
