booksellers.

Standard

72-year-old bookseller, Mohamed Aziz, in Rabat, Morocco, spends 6 to 8 hours a day reading books. Having read over 5000 books in French, Arabic, and English, he remains the oldest bookseller in Rabat after more than 43 years in the same location. When asked about leaving his books unattended outside, where they could potentially be stolen, he responded that those who can’t read don’t steal books, and those who can, aren’t thieves.

  1. There was a “Twilight Zone” episode, the original Rod Serling series, televised during my childhood. It told of an older gentleman who loved nothing more than to read. He had a difficult wife who constantly criticized him and when upset would shuffle off the library and read in solace for hours. His one happiness. At the end of the episode, there was a world catastrophe which destroyed the entire town and its inhabitants. (I know the Twilight Zone was always dark). The old man at that fateful moment happened to be in a bank vault where he worked as a banker, and escaped unscathed. When he walked out on to the street, he looked around in the silence and destruction. The first building he spotted was the Public Library. Delighted he made his way across the street, then right before he entered fell and broke his glasses….The photo in your story reminded me of that heartbreaking story and one man’s love of reading above all else…

  2. I’ve long mourned the demise of the independent bookstore. My favorite one in Okla. City went out of business years ago when one of the big chain stores opened in the area. And recently The Tattered Cover, a well-known Denver establishment, closed their last location.

  4. His philosophy about theft is spot on. I would imagine that most thieves are not great lovers of literature. The Little Free Libraries is an example of that.
