michigan penguins.

saw this group hanging out on the ice on the river

 my first thought was,

‘michigan penguins’

“plants and animals don’t fight the winter; they don’t pretend it’s not happening and attempt to carry on living the same lives that they lived in the summer. they prepare. they adapt. they perform extraordinary acts of metamorphosis to get them through. winter is a time of withdrawing from the world, maximizing scant resources, carrying out acts of brutal efficiency and vanishing from sight; but that’s where the transformation occurs. winter is not the death of the life cycle, but its crucible.”

-Katherine May – Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times, 2020.

  1. Love it.
I have to say I call all large birds, especially bird of prey, eagles because I love the idea of there being eagles in my town. I might look out for some Conwy penguins on my park tomorrow morning :)

  2. Thank you, Beth! The hubs and I were just talking about the winter resiliency of all the little critters…and he reminded me “they’re built for this”…preparing, adapting. Still…I’d like to feed them all and give them blankies. 🥰

  3. Love that quote..I sure wish I could adapt to winter but I’m certainly not as intelligent as plants and animals. :) They are part of winter…I on the other hand..am not.
I wonder what your penguins were..do you know? Some sort of ducks I imagine? Are you a birder? Chris

  4. Love this perspective on winter—it’s such a great reminder to embrace change and adapt. Funny enough, I’ve been in a bit of a “winter mode” myself—just had my furniture cleaned to refresh my space and it feels like a mini transformation!

  5. It is awe inspiring to think of how animals prepare and adapt to winter, from bears that hunker down and hibernate, to birds that migrate, to squirrels that hoard and prep stock of food ahead of time. Very inspiring!
