open mic night at the comedy club
where future comedians begin
everyone gets five minutes
(a tough gig, very brave souls, all)
to try out their material
win over the audience
including this guy
who sat off to the side
looking like he really enjoyed the set.

i knew that i would rather be a failure at comedy
than a success in marketing.’

When we saw my stepson at an open mic night, he did really well. But the act that followed died a 5-minute death in silence from the audience. That skeleton would have got more laughs. (Do you know Jimmy Carr over there? He really is an obnoxious, horrible person.)
Best wishes, Pete.

it’s such a tough thing, and always go either way, and I really don’t know jimmy Carr, that’s terrible to hear

He is very popular with some people, but a lot of us find him arrogant and insufferable, and he is know to be a tax avoider by having his fees paid into an offshore account in Jersey in the Channel Islands.

I do some ‘open mic poetry’ events, but I can only imagine how hard it is to do a 5-minute comedy gig …

It must be thrilling to go to an open mic event and then see where the path of the comedians leads.

This is perfectly timed. Last night with some friends, I was telling them about another friend who had to do his five-minute bit of stand-up as an exam to pass his stand-up course. This guy is definitely leaning in!

I so admire anyone who can do that. And yes Skelly sure was☠️!

I’m impressed by anyone with enough courage to get up on stage, even if they can’t sing, dance, act, or do comedy. I never could watch American Idol because it bothered me when they’d show clips of people who had no talent just to ridicule them.

it’s a tough gig doing stand-up; the closest I came is when I read some of my joke-filled poems to a dubiety of poets :)
