It’s the beverage that’s gone round the world! And in the novel, The Sparrow, the scent of it is prized on another world.
“Etymology
Italian & Turkish; Italian caffè, from Turkish kahve, from Arabic qahwa” The word “coffee” first known use in 1598, according to Merriam Webster.
I love coffee–the taste and the smell.

I used to drink so much strong coffee at one time it began to seriouslyaffect my stomach. So I changed to tea and now only have coffee occasionaly, as a ‘treat’. Still love the smell of it. ☕
Best wishes, Pete.

yes, about the smell. I began craving it when I was pregnant and was first drawn to the smell.

What a fun post Beth! I to really like the Ojibwe translation :)
I remember 2 coffee stories to share: dipping toast in a tiny bit of coffee when I was young. No idea how or why this started but I loved the taste. Later, as a teen working as a summer hire within the large company my dad worked at, teaching myself to drink black coffee during my AM/PM “coffee break” because that’s what all the adults did in the break room. It worked apparently because I do like black coffee still. It’s decaf however, but is my go to beverage every morning.

All I’ll say is I’m thankful Halloween fell on a Friday this year – and as a teacher, I know you can relate – and that we get an extra hour of sleep tonight!

I think “black medicine water” describes it best, Beth, although since I prefer almond milk in my coffee, mine would be brown medicine water. Same difference, I suppose. It’s healing!

It’s a similar name in many languages. I wonder why. And yeah, black medicine water is darn near perfect. I learned to love it fishing the ocean north of Boston. It was an adult thing.

Hard to believe there was a time when I drank instant coffee. Blech! And then for a few years I drank just black coffee. Blech! Still only one cup in the morning and that’s it. I doubt the stuff I brew would pass as coffee for most people.

I had coffee jelly once which I shared with everyone – it was in Tokyo! Never found the “colorless coffee” I also report on: https://johnrieber.com/2012/12/23/crazy-tokyo-food-coffee-jelly-meat-fish-mix-octopus-bar-almond-fish/

“Coffee” is one of those words that has spread around the world is now a near-universal. English ended up with two forms of the word: “coffee” and “café.”

And my husband usualyl reminds people that if they cannot drink their coffee back, they might need to try a better coffee.
we sometimes add cream or milk – and sometimes add a vital protein poweder scoop- but if the coffee is good, black can be so tatsy!
also, a lot of the names for coffee start with K….. interesting

When I worked at the library, Beth, I used to bring a cup of supermarket coffee from Nichols to my desk each morning and I was quite happy with it … and then the Dunkin’ opened down the street. New routine indeed.
