s, age 4, has taught himself to read. here, he has a teaching moment, when he reads a challenging non-fiction book, about the amazing story of two unlikely animals who became the best of friends. the animals were drawn together, through circumstance and fate, and each found what they needed in the other, becoming somehow better, and changed forever, by being together. as s reads aloud to his classmates, they begin to understand this, and learn that all things are possible.

“Teachers have three loves: love of learning, love of learners, and the love of bringing the first two loves together.”- Scott Hayden

    • thanks liz, i love it too. and you’ll be proud to know i do a lot of cooking and baking and tasting of foods with my class. every year, i bring in lots of different exotic fruits for them to try and this year, i’ll be bringing in some herbs for them to smell and taste. they always seem to enjoy the food adventures of all kinds.

  1. I loved that Scott Hayden quote. Learning is such a wonderful gift isn’t it?

Foe me Learning allows us to deal with the crisis of “Is this all there is?” It can further instill in us a
commitment to the realization of a future (a cause) that leaves us with a passion for living.

What could be done to instill the passion of learning in others?

  3. I’m a substitute teacher and just love it when I get assigned to cover an AIS instructor. Reading and math are my favorite subjects. At a large 5th grade class (28 students) I taught on Monday, almost the entire class raised their hands to read paragraphs in science and social studies. How refreshing!
Great post and quote. Reading is invaluable no matter what direction your life takes.

  4. You have a great way of allowing the children to be themselves. Each photograph shared lets us not only into your classroom but into the way you give of your life to the little ones. Such a wonderful gift of acceptance and nurturing, Beth! Loved this storyteller, ‘reading’ the challenging non-fiction book and your quotes are always perfectly matched!
