what a feeling!

with great expectations

i went

to my favorite detroit theater

in the beautiful fisher building

to see the broadway adaptation

one of my favorite

guilty pleasure movies

of the 80s

back then

i had

the perm

the leg warmers

the ripped up sweatshirt

the dance moves

the music

i couldn’t wait

to see

iconic scenes

to hear

once more

the live show

turned out

more like this

only worse

and it was

quickly apparent

my expectations

way too high

just like

my old perm.

both expectations and memories are more than mere images founded on previous experience.

  1. LOL Beth! I think Flashdance is still playing at Playhouse Square here – don’t know it it’s good or not. At least you got to enjoy the venue! Did you wear your leg warmers to the show for old times sake?!

  2. Gotta hand it to you ladies; you seem to have to put up with more pain-in-the-butt fashion trends than men do. That tall hair in the ’80s was really something, wasn’t it? I recently saw a series of “Confirmation Class” photos from a local church from the ’70s thru the ’90s; looks like the perm height “peaked” around 1987 or ’88?

  3. Ah, that was an era, wasn’t it? Another favourite of mine from that time was the original “Fame” movie. I was a drama student when it was released, and my friends and I were hopeful that we too would dance our way to stardom. The leg warmers and the wild hair became a symbol of the ages for us. Wonder what I’d look like with a spiral perm now – like the crazy old lady I probably am. I’d better be careful or someone will put me in a home for the bewildered…

  4. I am disappointed for you, Beth. This would upset me since I also loved this musical movie. Wish the play had been like the movie. Darn! Shoot, loved the images of a perm, leggings and the whole 9 yards, Beth. I felt like I ‘had it going on!’ (Not!) Smiles!

  5. I’d like some tips on how to make leg warmers if anyone knows…. please let me know. The ONE pair I’ve got is getting a little boring. 🙂

Beth, I love your blog and I’m sure you’re inundated with these all of the time but I’ve nominated you for the “Real Neat Blog Award”.

You can find a link here: https://arttherapygirl.wordpress.com/2015/03/24/yay-somebody-thinks-im-swell-the-real-neat-blog-award/

    I think that’s how I’m supposed to do this?! Haha! First-timer.. I don’t know what I’m doing. 🙂
