nacho the cat not the food
decided to head outside
just before a huge rainstorm
and chose to
stay outside
not his usual response
to iffy weather
when he’d come inside
to stay warm and dry and safe
watching from the window
but not today
he opted for
living life on the edge
when i called him
there was
no familiar meow
finally
i had to go to bed
i left my window open
to listen for his cry
with every downpour
i worried about him more
like a teenager
breaking curfew
a bit mad and a bit worried
at the same time
on this hot night
no magical white noise fan for me
to better hear him
couldn’t sleep
when i thought of all of
the possible scenarios
had a dry towel waiting
kept tossing and turning
finally at the bewitching hour
of 3am
i heard his tiny meow
ran downstairs
opened the door
only to see him standing there
dry and warm and fluffy
he strolled in
like nothing unusual had happened
and looked at me
as if to say
“what?”
went to his bowl
scarfed down his food
we both laid down
went to sleep
i didn’t ask any questions
and he didn’t explain
we have a mutual
‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy
between us.

happiness is like a cat, If you try to coax it or call it, it will avoid you; it will never come. but if you pay not attention to it and go about your business, you’ll find it rubbing against your legs and jumping into your lap.

Naughty Nacho, making you worry like that, but glad he’s OK. Do you know how he managed to stay dry and fluffy in a rainstorm?

Oh my, I can relate! Every once in a great while I’ve been jarred awake by that same tiny meow- only this has happened when I had no idea one of the felonious felines had weaseled outside! Wonderful poem. So glad the suave Nacho returned dry and well (feisty little feline!). Best wishes,
smiling toad

Oh, I do try to stay out of their business but it scares me so when they break routine – ultimately they are small and vulnerable in a sometimes violent world.

So glad he’s OK. I wonder how he stayed dry? My cats are strictly inside cats. The one time my special little guy got out (frightened, I think by my husband vacuuming up a flooded basement), I was crying and frantic for days until I got him back. He seemed happy to be home, too.

Look out for a nearby hot tin roof. That cat has spent a night on the tiles.

I loved this one and all its playfulness, Beth! I would worry and would feel like I could not sleep. I love the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy and how in the world he managed to stay dry?!!! :)

We can to learn every day a bit from them. Big observers with a large ‘hard disk’, that we can caress (not always). Greetings! ; )

So, so sweet. I dropped my daughter off at the airport today to fly off and visit her sister. I actively (secretly) have to fight off anxiety every time one of my kids travel. But just like Nacho, you gotta let ’em be free to explore and find their own adventures. And just like with your cat..when they do come back..sometimes it’s don’t ask, don’t tell. 🐵🙈🙉

Been there! Cats like their routines so when they break it (maybe to see if we are paying attention!) it is worrisome. Glad all worked out well.

Nacho with a second cottage mom, Beth? This is how it starts … One late night turns into … No, not happy little Nacho. It has to be a misunderstanding!

I could hardly read to the end but snickered at the attitude. Yes all to typical. Our kitties are indoors, since I’ve lost a kitty once. I couldn’t bare a night like you had, it’s just too much. My neighbours mom thinks I’m a meanie but I’ve seen Coyote’s one block away. They stroll around the valley with these Lizzy-fair attitutes. Glad little Nacho made it home safely, of course he had no doubts at all…..yeeesh!
