scottish children gave their goldfish a viking funeral
most people could only be so lucky as to receive the kind of funeral that two goldfish in the scottish isle of orkney were given by some children who were learning about vikings.
the pair of classroom mascots, bubbles and freddy, belonged to the 3rd and 4th grade classes of the papdale school in the town of kirkwall, according to the BBC. the fish had been with the students for a few months, but died about a week before the kids were due to learn about the vikings, so it was decided that they would send the pets to valhalla with a viking funeral.
the students created a small fleet of miniature coffin boats to send off the deceased, fashioned out of cereal boxes and egg crates. they also wrote and recited their favorite memories about bubbles and freddy. finally, they led a funeral procession to a nearby stream where the boats were put in the water, and the lead vessel was set on fire.
may bubbles and freddy forever swim in the halls of their warrior heaven, valhalla.

20 years from now from someone present the question “does anyone know what takes place at a viking funeral?” one of these children will have the answer. I’m all for interactive lesson plans.

Learning about something in another culture, and trying it out, because it seemed the right thing to do. Well now, isn’t that something we could all learn from.

It is a great way to learn for kids, but even better for them, if this was their first funeral at all. This makes the next more easy to bare, no matter who this will be.

Thanks, Beth. I knew I could lean on you a bit! <3
Sadly, my employer/boss thought the lack of broken bones and "only" moderate contusion "verdict" meant I could have finished shift. I worked there more hours after injury, waiting till first truck was loaded. A big difference in perspectives between warehouse and teaching, sadly.
Waiting on tow truck because me son and his grandfather in law tried all sorts of parts to try and fix it on cold, blustery Saturday. He put a new battery in December on really freezing night! I remember when your car "died" and crossing my fingers that the dealership will get this 9 year old car up and running soon. Sending you kisses and hugs for you! xo
