driving through the irish hills in michigan
i came across this interesting old barn
still standing
but with a roof
now open to the sky
what a beautiful upward view.

Why are they called the Irish hills?

The Irish Hills – Written by Dan Cherry
As immigration into the newly-christened Michigan state territory reached its peak, a small knot of Irish immigrants, some seeking new life in the United States, others fleeing the ongoing Potato Famine of 1846, called a small portion of northern Lenawee County home. The rolling hills and crystal lakes, it is said, reminded them of their home country and they acquired that tangible reminder of Ireland. Names like Kelly, Killarney, Brighton and Monaghan can be found on modern maps, a tribute to the original area in which they resided; the 1 ½ square-mile area around white is now St. Joseph Shrine.

Is it on the eastern side, Beth? I don’t know the area at all. And lovely that the shrine is to St. Joesph — keeper of the home.

yes, no roof left, but i thought what a beautiful view that would be

that is one big skylight. then again barns do that. and then the skylight gets bigger, and bigger, and bigger as the barn gets smaller.

My wish is that someday it’s reclaimed, repurposed and renewed with vigor, Beth.

Without the roof the rest of it will eventually fall down. The local critters have probably repurposed it. But it sure stirs the imagination.

yes, I liked finding it in this in between state and imagined looking up to the sky, always there

Yeah, I’ve always thought a glass roof would be kinda cool. At least in part of the house, maybe the bedroom.

I’m a sucker for barns. Around the area where I loved in the U.P. there was a bookstore (just for one summer, I think) called Books in the Barn. My idea of heaven.

For some reason, I am drawn to abandoned buildings – NOT wrecks, but places like this, who have held their structure while giving back what they no longer need – cover!

Leonardo is right. My world is filled with old buildings, log cabins, barns that are no longer needed, groves of trees around the spaces where once a house was. Lots of stories.

Don’t you see things like this and wonder about the hands of those who built it? What their lives were like….the satisfaction when they completed it? I love this.
