“As human beings, our job in life is to help people realize how rare and valuable each one of us really is, that each of us has something that no one else has or ever will have something inside that is unique to all time. It’s our job to encourage each other to discover that uniqueness and to provide ways of developing its expression.” …Fred Rogers

We will never know the width and breadth of his influence. But if you have good neighbors you can pretty well be sure they watched Mr. Rogers!
(I’d even vote to make “It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” the national anthem.)

We didn’t have that TV show over here, but I have learned about him from reading the tributes on American blogs.
Best wishes, Pete.

I loved his soft-spoken voice, his encouraging, positive messages. And his sweaters.

Although this might seem to be coming from an ignorant person; I only know of Mr Rogers with the funny sweaters since the film with Tom Hanks. Blame it on me being European and then especially Swiss….. But as I’d watch anything with Tom Hanks (have you read his recent book ‘Uncommon Types’?) I thus learned about this wonderful soul of a human being. Such a positive and kind influence. We need more of his type.

yes, you’re so right. he was one of those very special people. there’s a really good doc about him as well that is brilliant, called ‘won’t you be my neighbor?”

His ability to explain things in terms a child could understand was invaluable. Teach the children … and the future will be in good hands.

I watched Mr. Rogers growing up. I’d be home alone after school with my parents at work. He was what kept me calm and unafraid.

Thank you, Beth. He is one of my heroes, and school is a big advocate as well. I was lucky to hear him speak at a national NAEYC conference many years ago. Have you seen his documentary (not the movie?). Oh, my!

that’s so lucky. I met a woman who worked for him for 40 years, on the show and other projects, who was in the doc, also at naeyc. her stories confirmed who he was, at work and real life, never changed, always kind and steady.

How lucky to have met her. Big wow! I’ve always heard how he was on TV was how he really was.
