painted rocks left on a tree stump in our courtyard
—
our science teacher
retiring after many years
has lovingly hand painted
180-ish unique and detailed rocks
one for each of the children in our early childhood program
all having to do with science, nature, kindness, joy
our children were absolutely thrilled
with this lovely legacy.

What a strange offering. Since seeing your post this morning I’ve been trying to track down the word meraki. Wiktionary says that Greek took it from Ottoman Turkish, where it meant “desire, enthusiasm”:

I’ll let you know if I learn more.

I asked someone in Greece about meraki. Here’s the answer I just got:
“To do something with ‘meraki’ is to do something with the heart and soul. ‘Essence of ourselves’ is probably giving it a slightly different meaning. For example: you take your photographs with meraki.”

This is one of my favorite things to discover while out and about– painted rocks with a message. What a loving act of kindness by that science teacher.

I wonder how many languages and cultures have a version of this word. I suspect we’d be better off if everyone had this word.
